CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Alex pulled a chair close to me and sat. He was careful not to touch me, I noticed. âCatherine? Are you okay?â
I sat up so abruptly, our heads nearly collided. âAm I okay? Am I okay?â My voice rose a notch with each question. I stopped and regained control of myself. âContinue.â
âYes, an incubus is a demon. I am a half-incubus. My mother was a human seduced by an incubus. Normally children donât result from these unions, but,â he shrugged, âIâm here.â
âYes, you are.â
This time Alex remained silent.
âYou seduce women?â
âUm, I can actually seduce women or men; itâs not necessarily a sexual thing.â
I smirked when a blush spread across his face.
âWait. How does that work? Have you seduced me? Is that why I find you so attractive?â I stared at him incredulously.
He grinned wickedly at those questions. âNot at all, Catherine. I swear to you that I have not seduced you â at least not in that way. Though Iâd still like to exploreââ
That was not fully true and a knot formed in my stomach. âNot yet,â I stopped him and he obliged. âHow does it work?â
âThe seduction, simply by proximity. Pheromones, I suppose.â
I nodded. That seemed reasonable. You know, given the topic.
âTo make irresistible suggestions to other people, I inhale a tiny amount of the other personâs soul.â
âThatâs the white mist I saw?â
âYes.â
âWait. You inhale part of their soul?â
âYes.â
I felt the blood draining from my face. He inhaled their souls. âIt is you, killing the women!â
âRumors of the deadliness of my abilities have been greatly exaggerated,â he quipped.
âHow can you joke about this?â
Immediately contrite, he explained. âI rarely use my abilities, and when I do, itâs only the smallest amount of soul necessary to achieve the desired results.â
âYou sound so clinical.â
âSorry.â
I waved off the apology. âYou said you rarely use your abilities. When do you?â
âMostly if I need to calm someone down.â
âLike Michael Onyx outside the restaurant.â
âYes.â
âYouâve never used them to harm anyone?â
âIf youâre asking if Iâve ever killed anyone, I canât say that.â I inhaled sharply and he hurried to continue. âI didnât always know how to use my abilities safely. But, I have never taken deliberate advantage of anyone. And I didnât kill those four women.â
I noticed his careful word choice. I still found myself sympathizing. What he said was true; and how would I handle it if I learned I could suck souls and control people? Iâd struggled with feeling like a freak when I found out I could tell if someone was being truthful.
âIt seems that sucking out someoneâs soul would be bad even if you didnât kill them. Does it,â I struggled for the right word, âgrow back or regenerate?â
Alex chuckled. âYes, it replenishes. Think of it like the liver,â he explained. âYou can lose someââ
âLike from drinking alcohol?â
âI was thinking more like from trauma, but probably,â he answered with a smile. âThe development of new cells will continue; the soul is somewhat like that.â
I hesitated, considering the logic in the analogy. âOkay,â I finally said.
